Barton House is a move-on hostel providing long term accommodation for a wide variety of people including those with mental illness, drug and alcohol related issues, those who are homeless and others who have been in prison or are on probation.
Barton House has facilities for fourteen residents and is staffed on a twenty-four hour basis. The staff teach the residents life skills covering areas such as budgeting, self-care and relationship building, with a view to helping them to more independent living. The staff also help to facilitate the residents getting involved in community groups, for instance attending the local community art classes and computer courses. One resident commented, ‘I have realised what life is. It is more than drinking and being on the streets. I have my confidence back.’
