What do we mean when we say Social Action? The phrase sounds familiar; but that doesn’t mean it can be overlooked! The words convey a positive response to needs within the wider community. As Christians, Social Action speaks of something even more significant – it points to loosening the chains of injustice and sharing food with the hungry. We are also urged to provide shelter and clothe those who lack and help people see the potential of who they can be.
Social action has been a central part of the life of the King’s Arms Church ever since it began. The King’s Arms Project started life in 1990 as a discipleship house staffed entirely by volunteers who offered support to residents. Many were dealing with life issues such as addictions, self-harm, eating disorders and depression. It has now grown into a charity employing approximately 20 staff in a Nightshelter and Barton House hostel, providing accommodation and support for up to 32 otherwise homeless residents each night. It also offers assistance in developing lifeskills by means of two floating support workers known as Onward . Streetwork and the Friday Night Meeting are also core to the work of the Project.
Volunteers still play a vital role in all its activities! If you would like to know more about the KA Project or could be interested in volunteering in some area of their work, then please contact us.
