There was a breakthrough when scientists discovered that the blueprint for life was contained within the DNA of every cell. It was this DNA that gave cells their individual structure and purpose and understanding it helped scientists understand what makes cells ‘tick’.

In the same way, we need to understand what makes up the DNA of a healthy small group if we are to lead them effectively. Of course this must reflect the purpose of the church as a whole. You've probably seen the KA 'compass' that shows our overall purpose of the church - but how should that work out in smallgroup? The pdf document attached here gives you an outline of the dna that we're expecting to see in every smallgroup - together with a crib sheet as to how to guide your group through the 'assessing our dna' exercise.

It's key that groups go through this exercise at least once every 4 to 6 months. It will enable the groups to 'self correct' - instead of it being the group leaders' responsibility to 'make the DNA happen' this exercise will help the whole group take ownership of what we are doing and why we are doing it.
